    Low sperm count, also known as oligospermia, means that the number of sperm in a man’s semen is less than normal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy sperm count should be between 15 million to 259 million per milliliter. If the count falls below 15 million/ml, it may be harder to have a child naturally.

    However, the good news is that there are many ways to improve sperm health. With some lifestyle changes and medical help, men with a low sperm count can still become fathers. Let’s look at some helpful tips and treatments.

    1. Healthy Eating

    A good diet can improve sperm health. Foods rich in zinc and folate (like nuts, seeds, and leafy greens) are helpful. Vitamin C also protects sperm from harm. Eating foods with Omega-3 like fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds can help with sperm movement and shape. Try to eat a variety of healthy foods daily.

    2. Exercise and Relaxation

    Doing moderate exercise often is good for sperm. It helps keep testosterone levels normal. But don’t overdo it—too much exercise can cause hormone problems.

    Reducing stress is also helpful. Try yoga, meditation, or deep breathing. High stress can change hormone levels and reduce sperm production.

    3. Good Sleep

    Men who don’t sleep enough may have lower testosterone levels. Sleep is important for hormone balance and overall health. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.

    4. Keep a Healthy Weight

    Being overweight can lower sperm count and quality. Regular exercise and eating well can help reach a healthy weight. This is important not just for fertility but also for general well-being.

    5. Avoid Harmful Habits

    Certain habits and exposures can lower sperm count. Try to avoid the following:

    • Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking reduces sperm movement and quality. Too much alcohol also lowers testosterone. Quitting smoking and drinking less can help improve sperm health.
    • Heat: Hot baths, saunas, and tight underwear raise scrotum temperature, which is not good for sperm. Choose loose-fitting clothes and avoid long heat exposure.
    • Chemicals: Stay away from harmful chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals. If you work in such environments, always use safety equipment.

    Sometimes lifestyle changes are not enough. In such cases, medical treatments may be helpful:

    • IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): Sperm is cleaned and placed into the uterus during ovulation. This helps sperm reach the egg more easily, even with a lower count.
    • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection): A single sperm is injected into an egg. This is usually part of IVF and is used when sperm count or movement is very low.
